Cooling Tower
A cooling tower is a mechanism for removing heat.
Essential Components of Cooling tower
Fan:
A cooling tower may have huge fans that circulate massive amounts of air. Though not all cooling towers employ fans, many do to create and direct airflow through the tower. They can push or draw air through the tower, and they can be axial or centrifugal depending on the need. Centrifugal fans are quieter and can handle higher levels of static pressure than axial fans.
Fill:
Fill, also known as wet deck or surface, is commonly made of textured polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and is essential to the cooling tower’s operation. It typically has ridges with gaps for the water and air to pass through. Its function is to allow water to gather on it, increasing the water’s surface area and boosting heat transmission between the water and the air.
Spray Nozzles:
The cooling tower’s spray nozzles can also be helpful in expanding the water’s surface area. The spray ensures that the water is distributed evenly throughout the fill. And the droplets offer a significant surface area for air contact.
Distribution basin/Hot water basin:
It typically consists of a pan with holes or nozzles along its base and is located the top of the tower. Hot water enters through the tower’s top and is dispersed over the fill material below through holes or nozzles.
Collection Basin:
The collecting basin, also known as the cold water basin, is located at the base of the tower and collects the water after it has cooled.
Inlets and outlets:
The cooling tower’s inlets and outlets draw cool air in from the environment and expel warm air after it has absorbed the water’s heat.
Drift Eliminators:
Drift or water loss is undesirable in a cooling tower, Helps to maintaining the water secure in the tower.
